Erectile Dysfunction: Which Way to Go, Medicated or Natural?

For many, many years, erectile dysfunction (ED), commonly known as impotence, was considered a condition affecting mostly the elderly. Indeed, it’s prevalent among men over 55. However, in a few resent decades, erectile dysfunction has become much more common among younger men, too. According to statistics, men younger than 40 years old account for about 25 per cent of all cases of ED.

With the condition ‘getting younger’, a lot of men become interested in the treatment options available today. The good news is that since the first ED drug, Viagra, appeared on the market in the late 1990s, other medications have also been developed by the present time. So today we have three main PDE5 inhibitors – sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra) – that are commonly used for ED treatment.

There are dozens of medicines that use one of these three as a main active ingredient. There are even some that use a combination of them. Since the brand name Viagra became iconic, other well-known sildenafil-based ED drugs – Suhagra, Kamagra, Silagra and others – are often referred to as simply generic Viagra.

Contemporary ED drugs are very effective and statistically help to cope with male impotence in more than 90 per cent of all cases. However, there are a few downsides.

Firstly, all PDE5 inhibitors tend to have just a temporary effect. This means that these drugs don’t cure but rather manage your ED. After you take a pill, you can perform great and satisfy even the most demanding woman. But as soon as the drug clears from your system, your erectile problems usually come back.

Secondly, PDE5 inhibitors have their own contraindications and come with a risk of certain side effects.

These two downsides make some men look for other options. There are many so-called natural remedies for ED. The most well-known of them include Ginkgo, Yohimbine, Horny goat weed and some others. These remedies are believed to be aphrodisiacs and have been used for centuries in folk medicine. The problem is, however, that none of them has been approved for ED treatment, so no result is guaranteed. Additionally, since these remedies haven’t yet been studied properly, theoretically they might have some harmful effects in the long run – nobody knows for sure.

There is also one natural way of dealing with ED in the broadest sense: a healthy lifestyle. It implies adopting a regular exercise routine and balanced diet, and also staying away from harmful habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol. If you already have ED, the effect of starting a healthy lifestyle on it may not be quick, but in the long run it can do wonders.

Unfortunately (or luckily), there is no one right answer to the question asked in the title of this article. As erectile dysfunction can be a result of a number of diverse causes, the condition requires different approaches in different cases.

There is one thing to tell for sure, though. Since prevention is always better then cure, adopting a healthy lifestyle now when you haven’t yet experienced erectile dysfunction is probably the most reliable way to make sure you’ll never know this condition, as well as many others.
